Visual Exercise 2 – Final Images

For Visual Exercise two, I saw an opportunity to document contrasts within the environments I had chosen to shoot. At Berwick upon Tweed, the meeting of land and sea as well as the the clashes between the man-made and natural elements of the coastline were fascinating. However, I have chosen to select my final images from my home town of Livingston. Livingston – An Ageing New Town The … Continue reading Visual Exercise 2 – Final Images

Visual Exercise 2 – Livingston Images

Here are some of the images I shot in Livingston. I haven’t yet decided whether to submit images from this set for Visual Exercise 2 or whether to use my shots from the coastline at Berwick upon Tweed. Deans South The remaining residents of Deans South have been locked in a battle with West Lothian Council since 2004 over payments for their condemned homes. Houston Industrial … Continue reading Visual Exercise 2 – Livingston Images

Visual Exercise 2 – Research – Plastic Spoon and Document Scotland

Plastic Spoon I was introduced to the work of Napier alumni Yoshi Kametani, specifically his ‘Plastic Spoon’ project. The images documenting the underclass of Edinburgh’s Muirhouse estates are dark and disturbing. This is a vastly different environment to Livingston, at least on the surface, however it is inspiring to see what can be produced in such places. http://www.mryoshi.com/?go=foto&album=plastic_spoon Document Scotland Document Scotland is a collective of … Continue reading Visual Exercise 2 – Research – Plastic Spoon and Document Scotland

Visual Exercise 2 – Further Livingston Research

I have been further developing my ideas for using Livingston as my subject for Visual Exercise 2. The following are some areas that I would like to document. Deans South  Google Maps When I last visited Deans South, a large number of the houses had been abandoned and were boarded up. There was a huge legal battle after West Lothian Council had declared 85 homes … Continue reading Visual Exercise 2 – Further Livingston Research

Visual Exercise 2 – Photographer Research

Here, in anticipation of Visual Exercise 2, I will look at several photographers and how they have documented spaces. Alec Soth Alec Soth has a talent of documenting the brilliantly banal, mundane middle Americans. In ‘Sleeping by the Mississippi’ he photographed outsiders living on the edges of the American Mid-west. In Niagara, he captured the huge contrast of a place where people find themselves getting married … Continue reading Visual Exercise 2 – Photographer Research

Visual Exercise 2 – Location Research – Livingston

For Visual Exercise 2, I am required to document a space in five images and to attempt to communicate something of the nature of my chosen space. I have decided to avoid photographing in Edinburgh for this project as, despite its convenience, I feel that I am too familiar with it and it is one of the most photographed cities in the world. Location idea: Livingston, … Continue reading Visual Exercise 2 – Location Research – Livingston
